The only thing that almost saw me on a Trek Domane is they have mudguard fittings as standard.
Anyone riding through a UK winter without mudguards is crazy IMHO; you get covered in shite, your bottles literally get covered in shite and your clobber your mates and bike also get covered in shite … mudguards don’t completely fix these issues but they do reduce them.
So … be nice to your bike, yourself and your riding mates and fit full guards….
Any way this-was my solution to the problem with the Endurace.
I bought
– 35mm SKS Bluemels – full length guards.
– a small bit of carbon tube off eBay
– Some bikeshield frame protector
– Some 3M dual lock – like plastic velcro
– Some double sided sticky pads
I already had some band on eyes that you get with CrudCatcher guards.
Below show the eyes, rubber O rings and other bits
I used Bike Shield on the frame first then used the UniBond pads to stick bits to the bike shield … which I know peels off.
For the eyes I first put the bikeshield on, then applied a stick pad to the eye; trimmed it then put the rubber O ring on … this holds the eye firmly and I know the bikeshield will peel off in the spring.

For the rear guard I used a small bit of carbon tube … filed the ends to a curve to fit the seat stays … wrapped the seat stays in bikeshield then cable-tied in the tube which then can bolt the guard to.
Where the guard kisses the down tube I used a bit of dual lock.
Where the guard passes though the chain-stays I used a double sided sticky pad.
Holding the front guard in place was the trickiest bit … to do that I placed a couple of double sided pads between the guard and the underside of the fork crown. Then used dual lock to stick the guard mounting eye to the front of the fork crown.
This is where Canyon could have made the biggest help by putting a bottle cage mount on the front of the fork to fit a guard. It would have looked nothing but helped enormously. I was tempted to drill one and put a pop nut in but I didn’t want to compromise my warranty or my forks … When you have done all the above you have a bike that looks like this…. I have probably done 800 miles on this set up with no issues. 2017 Update: I have made some proper carbon eyes to replace the CrudCatcher ones; this are much more “planted” and stop the guards moving so much .. an improvement. I layed up a few layers of carbon on the stays and forks over a leyer of soft progrip to mold the mounts to the exact profile of the stays. |
